I Hate Hate!

We have just enough religion
to make us hate one another,
but not enough to make us love one another.
Jonathan Swift

One of my daughter's former employers was fond of saying "I hate hate!" Our hate might be somewhat disguised and subtle (see cartoon) but, just the same, isn't it true that we tend to gravitate toward those who are and think more like us and to avoid and denigrate anyone else? As Max Lucado contends, "Oh, how we tend to cluster!"

The answer, I believe, is less religion and more spirituality. Literally, "religion" refers to whatever binds people together, like a ligament (re[lig]ion). Spirituality refers to our "binding" by and through the cross of Christ and his forgiveness and, empowered by the Holy Spirit, sharing God's love with everyone everywhere. God bless us to that end!
