Acceptable Idiocacy

To be a witness does not consist in engaging in
propaganda
nor even in stirring people up,
but in being a living mystery.

It means to live in such a way that one's life
would not make sense if God did not exist.
Cardinal Suhard

I've always been fascinated by the fact that the word "idiot" has roots in the word "mystery." The Cardinal's quote above is thus even more fascinating because I've always been taught that witnessing is something that we do. To the contrary, the Cardinal maintains that witnessing is something that we are.

So although we aren't given permission to be lunatic in our witness, we are encouraged to be who we are in Christ--as crazy or foolish as that may be or seem. In fact, such "being" will not make sense in or sit right with a world where propaganda and "stirring" abounds. Makes sense to me!
