Holed up? Hold up!

Time for another do-over! The “slate” of our sins is once again wiped clean and, the Holy Spirit empowering us, we will try to keep it that way.

Not that we must—or even can. Ahhh! No pressure or hype, as more than one auto dealer advertises. Just the same, consider the following poem, Another Year is Dawning, as a watchword of sorts as we begin another year in Jesus’ name:

Another year is dawning, dear Master, let it be,

in working or in waiting, another year with Thee.

Another year of mercies, of faithfulness and grace;

another year of gladness, shining from Thy face.

Another year of progress, another year of praise,

another year of proving Thy presence all the days.

Another year of service, of witness to Thy love,

another year of training for holier work above.

Another year is dawning, dear Master, let it be,

on earth or else in heaven, another year for Thee.

Adapted from Francis Ridley Havergal (1874)

As I further reflect on the year 2010, I’m also recalling some words from a popular wedding song: “We don’t know what tomorrow holds, but we know who holds tomorrow.”

Bring 2010 on!
